ADVANCED PLACEMENT: WHAT IT IS AND WHAT ARE THE RULES AND REGULATIONS?

 

Advanced Placement course are our most difficult courses.  They are taught at a college level.  The courses culminate in nationwide exams in May administered by the College Board.  Tests are graded on a point scale of 1 to 5.  Those who score 3 or above MAY receive college credit at the college of their choice.  Our experience is that our students have received as many as ten college credits for EACH AP course.   Students enrolled in Advanced Placement Courses MUST TAKE THE AP EXAM.

We provide textbooks for the course.  However, many students enrolled in these classes like to "highlight" and mark the book like most college students.  If that is your desire, books may be purchased through the school.  They are normally $30 - $60 depending upon the course.  Students who "highlight," mark, or otherwise damage books owned by the school will have to pay for them at the end of the semester.

Any student in school is free to enroll in Advanced Placement Courses.  However, they should be exceptional students and realize that this is college level work.

While in high school AP American History can be used to replace the regular American History Regents class in grade 11, AP European History can replace Global History 2, and AP English can be used to replace the required 12th grade English.  AP courses can also be used as a 5th unit for a 5-unit sequence even in English or social studies.  Students may also want to take AP courses in addition to required courses.

The Advanced Placement Exam is administered at a specific time and date in May similar to Regents Exams.  The course is not terminated at that time, however.  Class continues right on through the end of the school year, as in any other courses.

AP courses are a valuable experience whether or not you receive college credit upon graduation.  Grades are weighted for Privilege Pass and Class Rank purposes.
